Present

Old Stoney now hosts various community events and serves as a cultural hub for the area.

Story

On Main Street in Sundance, Wyoming an iconic and beloved structure rises two stories above a beautifully landscaped community park. The sandstone building is affectionately known as "Old Stoney." Generations of Crook County residents graduated from the school, which was built in 1923 and held classes until 1971. The Historic Crook County Museum District bought the building for $10 from the Crook County Commissioners in order to preserve it as a historic site and expand the business ready options for the town of Sundance. The building was in poor condition and renovations began immediately. Today, it houses the Crook County Museum and Cultural Center.

The first floor of the building has offices for the Crook County Museum district, public restrooms, the Crook County Museum gift shop and archives as well as two office spaces for lease. The second floor of the building is the main body of the museum.

These improvements were made possible by private donations, grants and loans, including a 2017 Wyoming Business Council grant. The completion of the first two floors has allowed the community and visitors to access the museum and office spaces, but the third floor remains unfinished.

The Future - Our Vision

In 2024 the Crook County Museum District, with the help of The City of Sundance applied to the Wyoming Business Council for a grant to assist in the completion of the third floor of Old Stoney

The vision is for the third floor's historic stage to be refurbished to provide entertainment and meeting space. The space is large enough to accommodate weddings, dinners and other celebrations.
