Sundance, WY is home to one of the most unique, historical school buildings in the state of Wyoming.

Old Stoney Grand Stair

Old Stoney began as a school, serving the northeast corner of Wyoming in Crook County. It has been undergoing renovations and upgrades for the past few years, and has taken on new life as the Old Stoney Business & Cultural Center which opened in June of 2021.

Home to the Crook County Museum

The second floor of Old Stoney Business & Cultural Center houses the Crook County Museum and all its exhibits.

The Art Gallery and Gift Shop is located on the main level, along with a large, state-of-the-art conference room, and four leased office spaces for local businesses.

Old Stoney Renovations Continue

Fundraising efforts are ongoing in order to finish the 3rd floor of the building, which will be a great asset to the surrounding communities! The top floor will house an auditorium and stage, with original ornate-tin ceiling tiles, a kitchen and a party/meeting room.

Be sure and check out this phenomenal, historic building while in the area and see all it has to offer!

Old Stoney's Story

The Sundance School, nicknamed “Old Stoney,” opened as the first designated high school in Crook County in December 1923, and was used for high school and later elementary school classes until 1971, when it was replaced by a new one-story school building.

It is a substantial and outstanding example of 1920s institutional architecture designed with the intent to construct a lasting facility for the education and social development of the community's young people.

At two stories with a garden level basement, it is one of Sundance's most impressive buildings.

It was designed by the firm of Link and Haire, Architects of Billings, Montana.
